Ten benefits of 3D and AR for e-commerce, with the evidence

Lists of 3D and AR benefits tend to mix measured results with things that sound right, and give both the same weight. The ten below are in the order we think they matter. Where a figure comes from a named source, the source is given. Where there is none, we say what we have seen with clients and why we think the benefit is there.

1. Shoppers who interact with 3D convert more often

Shopify said in September 2020 that products with 3D or AR content converted 94 percent more often than the same kind of products without it. Rebecca Minkoff, working with Shopify, reported that shoppers who viewed a product in AR were 65 percent more likely to buy, and that those who interacted with a 3D model were 44 percent more likely to add to cart.

Both figures compare shoppers who opened the viewer with shoppers who did not, and the ones who open a viewer were more interested to begin with. Some of the difference is selection. The direction is reliable, and the exact percentages should be read with that in mind.

2. Fewer returns, at least for some categories

Gunner Kennels reported a 5 percent drop in return rates after adding AR, in the same Shopify write-up. It is a small figure, and one of the few return numbers tied to a named company rather than to an industry survey.

Returns are a large cost. The National Retail Federation, with Appriss Retail, put US returns at 743 billion dollars in 2023, 14.5 percent of sales, with the online rate at 17.6 percent. For a retailer with an online return rate anywhere near that, each percentage point is a lot of money, which is why returns usually carry the business case for 3D.

3. Size and fit questions get answered before checkout

We have not measured this one ourselves. After Sweef put its modular sofas into a configurator, the support questions about whether a given combination would fit a room largely stopped. Nobody counted them before and after, so there is no percentage to report. The client's account is what we have, and the reason behind it is easy to see, since a model placed at real size in a room answers a question that a photo cannot.

4. One 3D asset replaces many photo shoots

A single model gives you every angle and colourway, and any room scene you want, and it can do the same again next season without a studio booking. It is a cost saving rather than a conversion gain, and it is the one our clients notice first, on their own invoices.

There is no published figure for it because every retailer's photography budget is different. If you shoot ten products a season at studio rates, compare that against our pricing and you will have a better number than any industry average.

5. Product variants stop needing separate photography

MELIMELI sells sofas in dozens of fabrics. Photographing every combination is not practical, so a configurator swaps the material on one model instead. For a catalogue that size it is the only workable way to show every option.

6. AR works without an app

This is a fact about the platforms rather than a measurement. On Android, Google's Scene Viewer launches AR from a web link on any ARCore device running Android 7.0 or later. On iPhone and iPad, AR Quick Look does the same from Safari on iOS 12 and later. Neither requires the shopper to install anything.

Ten years ago AR meant an app download, and most shoppers never got past that step. The link now opens AR directly.

7. Longer time on the product page

Everyone measures this and almost nobody publishes it in a form you can check. A 3D viewer is an interactive element on a page that otherwise has none, and people spend time with it. Whether that time causes sales or only goes along with interest is unresolved. It is on the list because it is a real effect you can see in your own analytics, and it should not be used as proof on its own.

8. The shopper can inspect details a photo flattens

Material, joinery, thickness, how a hinge works. Hotspots on a 3D model attach an explanation to the exact spot on the product the shopper is looking at. For products sold on their construction, this is the feature that matters most.

9. AR shifts the confidence problem for high-consideration goods

Contura sells wood-burning stoves. Most buyers have never bought one and cannot picture the size in their own living room. Placing the stove in the room at true size removes the biggest hesitation before an expensive order. We have no controlled test of this. It was the feature the client asked us to build first.

10. The assets outlive the campaign

A photograph is shot for one layout. A 3D model can be re-lit, re-posed and re-rendered for a catalogue, a banner, a marketplace listing and an AR view, for as long as the product is on sale.

What the evidence adds up to

Only a few of the ten come with a number from a named company, and those are the Shopify, Rebecca Minkoff and Gunner Kennels figures above. Several are facts about how the platforms and the production work and need no study. The rest are what we see in daily work and cannot cite. A list of ten benefits with ten confident percentages is not drawn from published research, because for most of them the research does not exist.

If you want a number for your own catalogue, measure it. Put a 3D model on one product page and compare conversion and returns against a comparable product for a month. We build the first model for nothing, so the test costs you the time to set it up. Send us one product, or look at what we offer if you already know you want more than one.
